There's a little question mark next to the 'Batting Averages' box on each collection page which explains this (neat!) idea:

http://www.archive.org/about/help-batting.php/prelinger.php

'The batting average of an item in the Archive is the percentage of people who downloaded the item after visiting its details page (statistically corrected to account for small sample sizes).Ranking by batting average can highlight interesting items that may not yet have received a lot of visits, and it avoids the "rich-get-richer" behavior of ranking by the number of downloads.'

Regards,
s!

The batting average is somewhat irrelevant IMO. Just because I go to the site to view a new review (which I tend to do) and then NOT download it means I drive the batting average down? I was somewhat annoyed by this for awhile (but lol I've moved on). I really don't think the 'Batting Average' statistic is hardly accurate, I'll always go with the "number of times downloaded"
